Click for Babies Design Contest

Our friends at the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome (NCSBS) have set a HUGE goal for 2018. Working together, Mary Maxim and the NCSBS aim to reach and support more families than ever before with the Period of PURPLE Crying educational program and the CLICK for Babies campaign. We need you, the knit, and crochet communities to make this possible.

The NCSBS’ Period of PURPLE Crying program is an evidence-based prevention program active since 2007. In the past 11 years, they have reached more than 3 million parents and caregivers to educate families on early increased infant crying and the dangers of shaking a baby. Parents’ and caregivers’ frustration with a baby’s inconsolable crying is a key factor in incidents of Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma (SBS/AHT). Educating families about infant crying and the dangers of SBS/AHT is a proven way to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome.

As part of this education program, families of new babies leave the hospital with newborn hats (that are at least 50% purple) along with the Period of PURPLE Crying program materials (booklet/DVD package or booklet/App package). These hats are meaningful tools to remind those who care for these precious newborns about the Period of PURPLE Crying: that crying is ok, crying is normal, and this period of crying will end. These important purple newborn hats prompt parents to review their PURPLE program materials, recall the characteristics of PURPLE Crying, and remember their own coping skills until the crying ends.

We need your help!

In order to support more parents and caregivers than ever before, we need a record amount of purple CLICK for Babies newborn hats. To achieve our goals, Mary Maxim, in partnership with the NCSBS, are hosting a Design Contest. Check out the full Design Contest rules and Guidelines.

We will be selecting 3 crochet newborn hats and 3 knitted newborn hats to be featured in an exclusive CLICK for Babies Mary Maxim kit that uses Mary Maxim’s Trendy Baby Yarn. Thirty percent (30%) of this CLICK for Babies kit goes directly to support the Period of PURPLE Crying educational program. In the meantime, we are offering 10% off of Trendy Baby Yarn at www.marymaxim.com until February 28th.

I was introduced to the fiber arts like many crafters by my great-grandmother. She was determined that if I ever needed to repair some socks or make myself a sweater then I would know how. Little did she know that it has led to a rather large yarn hoarding addiction and fascination with needles. As a life long crafter I am always learning new techniques and improving my skills.

  • It is vital that new parents learn how to appropriately deal with these infants in distress and not give in to their frustration.
We must also be sure that these babies in distress have been properly evaluated for what used to be called “colic” i.e. “Gastric Reflux” It is a grave mistake to assume that just because we can’t stop the crying with the usual measures that there is not a physical problem that can be fixed. Babies can’t tell us what is wrong. We should not allow them to suffer this very real pain just because we can’t figure out what is wrong.

    • You are absolutely right! Unfortunately sometimes babies are inconsolable which is also normal. Thanks for reminding us that if we are unsure then, we need to get it checked out and see our pediatrician.
