How To – Plastic Canvas stitches

We have been getting requests lately for more tutorials about needlepoint and plastic canvas and we would love to help out with that! Plastic canvas is a variation of traditional needlepoint and is used to create decorative 3D designs. We have many fun kits available here and they come with everything you need to complete your project. We also offer a plastic canvas club which will allow you to get a new and different kit mailed to you each month. Today we are going to talk about 2 of the most common stitches used in needlepoint, what they are used for, and how to do them! The 2 basic stitches we will be talking about today are half cross and overcast.

Half Cross stitch

Half Cross stitch

Half cross stitch is exactly as it sounds- half of a cross stitch, making a diagonal stitch. This stitch is most commonly used in horizontal rows. Half cross stitch uses less yarn than the Continental stitch due to the fact it does not cover the back of your canvas. Check out the video below to see how to complete the Half Cross stitch.

Overcast stitch is used to create a nice finished edge on your plastic canvas work or is also used when joining two pieces of canvas together. This easy to follow video will show you how it is done.

    • Hi Carol! Which types of patterns are you looking for? I can look through our archives and see what I can find.

  • I would like wall hangings, any decorations or ornaments and tissue covers especially for the cookie monster and anything with the Canadian flag on it. Thanks, Carol
