21 DIY Christmas Ornaments

In a season that can seem so commercial the Handmade Christmas Tree Ornament is a seasonal DIY-er’s favorite way to pass on holiday traditions.  Decorating a Christmas Tree is a Yule time practice dating back to 16th century Germany.  Back then, it was not called a Christmas tree but a Paradise Tree and often decorated with apples, cookies, candles, angels, and flowers.  It wasn’t until the mid 18th century and the Industrial Revolution when glass Christmas Bulbs in the shape of fruit started to become mass-produced.  Also in the mid 18th century a large wave of German and English immigrants also arrived on the shores of North America bringing new farming techniques as well as bringing many of the Christmas Traditions we think of today.  The popularity of Christmas Trees skyrocketed in the English Speaking world when the tradition was adopted by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.  We love that we have been a part of your Christmas Tradition for over 60 years, here are 21 DIY Christmas Tree Ornaments to add to your seasonal display.

Beaded DIY Ornaments

Beads and Bobbles have been adorning Christmas Trees from the beginning.  Early on, glass was blown into the shapes of fruit and added to the tree as fresh fruit was far too scarce and expensive.  Beads were often worked into the shapes of angels and flowers to add a bit of sparkle to the tree.

I was introduced to the fiber arts like many crafters by my great-grandmother. She was determined that if I ever needed to repair some socks or make myself a sweater then I would know how. Little did she know that it has led to a rather large yarn hoarding addiction and fascination with needles. As a life long crafter I am always learning new techniques and improving my skills.
