Can you believe it’s less than 2 weeks until Christmas and 3 weeks away from 2021. I don’t know what to be more excited for, Christmas Presents or the end of the year 2020. Today’s featured designer is Cheryl Lampart, the host of Knitter Matters, a live knitting series on facebook with her wonderful knit ornaments. Don’t forget to check out yesterday’s crochet hat from With Alex. Enter our very special Christmas Countdown Giveaway at the end of the post. Stop back and visit every day for new Free Patterns. All patterns expire on January 7th, 2021. This week’s giveaway ends tonight at midnight!
I’m Cheryl Lampard, and as well as being an image consultant with my company, Style Matters International, my lifelong passions are sewing and knitting. In particular, knitting is my relaxation, my therapy, and it’s something I do every day.
Thirty years ago, I owned a yarn store in Brighton, England, where I was able to share that passion with other yarn enthusiasts. The store was called “YōMō” (Japanese for wool, literally meaning “hair of the sheep”) and one of the things I most enjoyed was designing sweaters which we’d sell as kits. Sometimes I’d design something purely for a window display, only to find it would become a bestseller! At around the same time I was commissioned to design a collection of machine knitted, cashmere sweaters for a store in London’s Bond Street.
While that was a fantastic opportunity and I was honored to see my designs in a high-end store, one of the most rewarding things about owning YōMō, was teaching people how to knit. Being able to impart such a satisfying skill to others is very special.
Needless to say, my love of knitting has never left me. Earlier this year, I started teaching knitting via a dedicated Facebook page – Knitter Matters – through weekly live videos. Aimed at the newbie knitter or the “lapsed” knitter, each week covers a different knitting topic or technique, and I love being a knitting educator just as much as I enjoy the craft!
It’s funny the things that bring a (happy) tear to the eye. Searching through the archives from my store, I knew I’d kept the handmade cards my parents (who sadly, are no longer with us) made for the shop – Dad did the drawings, Mum made the knitted accessories. What I didn’t know I still had, was my mother’s handwritten instructions for little knitted stockings which were created for a different card design.
Named after my mother, I’ve called this pattern Beryl’s Little Christmas Stockings. As the original design was intended to be fixed flat against a card, I’ve written additional instructions so that a matching “back” can be made, so both sides can be sewn together to make a tiny stocking that opens at the top for a lovely knit ornament.
The pattern uses a #3 weight DK/Sportweight yarn, using US 4 (3.5mm) needles. The ideal yarn with which to make these stockings is Mary Maxim Mellowspun. There’s a perfect Red in the range, and plenty of other colors if you want to make striped stockings. You’ll get a lot of stockings out of one ball of Mellowspun!
My second pattern is Holly Leaves and Berries. I made a bunch of them to decorate a festive wreath for my studio, then carried on making them as the perfect knitter’s trimming for wrapped gifts, lovely knit ornaments, or added to a sweater for a festive touch. Again, the ideal yarn is Mary Maxim Mellowspun. The Dark Green works beautifully for the holly leaves, and you could use your leftover Red from the stockings, for the berries.
You can find me on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, under Knitter Matters, and I’ve recently opened a Ravelry page under the same name. I’d love it if you’d Like, Share and Subscribe to my various social media platforms. I hope you enjoy these knit ornaments, they are truly a family favorite.
