Christmas Countdown – Free Granny Square Pattern

2019 seems to be the year of the Granny!  One of our most-watched tutorials on Youtube and Instagram is our Granny Square tutorial that you can find here.  Therefore, in today’s Christmas Countdown, we are featuring the Cali-Co Afghan.  This is an oldie but a goodie and an excellent pattern for all skill levels.  The Cali-Co Afghan was designed by Diane Curtin and published in 2008 and uses granny squares to create a popular quilting motif.

The original pattern calls for some colors that we no longer carry.  You’ll need 7 colors of coordinating yarn, and in the sample shown, the colors all nicely tie in with a variegated yarn.  You’ll see a similar technique in quilting when a calico (Cali-Co) print ties in several solid colors together, unifying the piece.  For this pattern, we recommend giving Mary Maxim Pooling Starlette a try.  Each color in our Pooling Yarn has 3 colors of coordinating yarn, which matches wonderfully with our line of Starlette Yarn.  There are so many possibilities. With this one, we are excited to see what you come up with.  For instance, many of the pooling colors have grey as a base color, which goes nicely with all of the colors on that gradient (White, Light Grey, Medium Grey, Black).
