1980's Packingline2

Since we opened in 1956, Mary Maxim has been known for our exclusive yarn, plastic canvas and craft kits. It takes a special team of people to put these kits together and ensure that every one of them is accurate. Many people don’t realize this, but every single kit and order that leaves Mary Maxim is packed by an individual and not a machine, and that is something we are very proud of. Our kit department is responsible for packaging all of our kits, this includes yarn, plastic canvas, latch hook, general crafts, as well as all of our monthly clubs. These ladies are busy!
Every kit, no matter what it may be, comes with full-color directions and a pattern. All of these patterns are printed right here in our building in our print shop. The patterns then get organized by pattern number, to make it as easy as possible when kits are pulled for orders.

One of many rows of patterns

Kits are assembled several at a time, and all of the kits for the Canadian and U.S. division are assembled in our Port Huron warehouse. After our pattern is pulled, multiple boxes of yarn and other components are then brought to our assembling area as shown below. Our kit department employees then work as a team to assemble as many kits as needed for the US and Canadian offices. We rely on the kit department team members to ensure each kit is accurately packed for your satisfaction and feel the real advantage of this is that we have kits pre-ready when you place your order.

The kit department is essential for the success of Mary Maxim with the number of exclusive kits that we offer. We believe there is nothing better than the gift of creating something by hand and take great pride in packaging every kit to ensure every customer is satisfied and has what they need to complete their project.

  1. VERY INTERESTING article! Looks like the top pic was taken some years back??? I noted the phone on the wall and am curious about that pic? Any idea when it was taken? I LOVED reading this article tho! KEEP “EM GOING Heather!!!

  2. I was one of your first customers. I learned to knit with your book. I made several of your heavy northland sweaters. I wish I still have the one I made myself. I started knitting again, so I’m back. I already receive your emails. Love to see what’s new.

  3. Great article and enjoyed it very much. I have been shopping with Mary Maxim since the 1950’s and love the quality and variety of the products. In fact i still have a treasured sweater I wear that I knit when you charted the pattern for me of my Old English Sheepdog and I knit it with the Titan yarns. I’m an old senior now at the age of 82 and still knitting – only now it’s for my great grandkids.

  4. I purchased my first M.M. kit when we were first married (50 years ago)–I did not know how to crochet or cross stitch or embroider. The kits taught me all I needed to know and provided such good quality materials that no one ever guessed that I was a “newbie” so thanks to all the care you put into each kit. It is greatly appreciated.

  5. Yes, that was an interesting article. I have ordered numerous kits from MM and they have all arrived in perfect condition and exactly as shown. Good work ladies!

  6. I have bought many kits snd yarn from Mary Maxim over the years and made many really beautiful afghan’s and baby blankets. Unfortunately, I get enticed when you put one I had been interested in on sale and buy it, which means I have a lot of fun ahead of me.

  7. It is always a pleasure to order from Mary Maxim and quality is guaranteed. Any problems you face are quickly adjusted and questions are answered by knowledgeable people! A great big THANK YOU to all of the employees. Their shop in Port Huron is also an interesting place to visit.

I started knitting your kits in the early seventies. Mostly the heavy sweater graphs. Still make many things today and still enjoy coming in and seeing what’s available in new kits. I think I would have enjoyed being on the kit processing side as well.

  9. You folks at Mary Maxim ROCK!!! I’m never without one of your kits handy so I can keep my hands busy. My granddaughter loves the things I make for her as her toys. Thanks for a great opportunity to create.

  10. I found this very interesting. It is so easy to take the kits for granted-you like one, you order, it arrives and you get to work. I have never really stopped to think about the step before the kit. Thank you very much for showing us the background and also to the team who works so hard to get them all correct.

  11. I have purchased many kits over the years as well as patterns, yarn and other knitting and crocheting items and have always been extremely pleased with the items I contact customer service to help locate specific yarn colors and they never fail me

  12. It was most interesting to see how kits are assembled seeing I order a many of you’re plastic canvas kits. Keep up the good work ladies.
